A Different 4th of July

We had a fabulous 4th of July but it was different than any others we've ever had. There was no parade and no 5k and no giant fireworks. But we did all of our own stuff and I think the kids didn't really care or notice, only the parents kept lamenting about the change.
The night before, the kids went golfing with Bish and Max only got frustrated a little bit (score!).

Sam also learned to edge the lawn!
Since there was no 5k this year, Toby took it upon himself to make our own! Please bless there is never another pandemic because I really don't want to do that again. But it all worked out and I don't know if it was fun because I was the only sane person who didn't run in the heat. I blamed it on my surgery, but I still wouldn't have done it anyway! We brought music and microphones so it would feel like a regular 5k and we had sponsors (The Johnson's) who gave away prizes. The kids did great and Toby even beat Bryce - 19 minutes! But he says gravity is pulling harder and harder on his old body.
Toby explaining the route, and I'm holding the 'gun' that I used to start the race.

Everyone avoided the sun for as long as possible.
These boys were ready to go!
Monte was nice and ran with Sam the whole way. And Sam did run the whole time!
Max was the first of the youngins to finish!

This was the best picture we could get with Sam after the race.
After the 5k, it was on to the main event - the slip n slide and foam machine!! The kids wait for this day all year. It's the best.

Every year the 'men' gather to figure out how to build a jump under the slip n slide. Every. Year.

We finished the night with fireworks with family and then fireworks in the neighborhood. I've never seen so many fireworks going off at everyone's houses. It was crazy!
